world class RUM. MADE IN DC.

Our mission is to learn from the best practices of the world's rum producers to create a line of distinctively American rums. We proudly source our Cane Syrup and Molasses from one of only two BONSUCRO-certified sugar refineries in the United States. All fermentation, distillation, processing, and bottling is done on-site at the Cotton & Reed Distillery in Northeast DC's Union Market District. Our spiced and flavored rums are made with whole fruits and botanicals, never bought flavorings.

WHITE RUM

2022 & 2023 Double Gold Medal, San Francisco World Spirits
2022 Best of Class, White Rum, San Francisco World Spirits Competition

A distinctive blend of influences results in a distinctively versatile rum, like a multi-island blend from a single distillery. With more weight and fruit in a Daiquiri than column-distilled Ron, a lighter touch with grapefruit soda or ginger beer than heavy pot-still rums, and the fresh grass to Ti' Punch above its weight class, Cotton & Reed White Rum can stand in for all of your classic cocktailing needs.

  • Fermentation is the key to building our richly layered flavor profile. We start with a blend of Cane Syrup and Blackstrap Molasses from one of just two BONSUCRO-certified sustainable sugar refineries in the US. Two separate, slow fermentations with Martinique agricole and Loire Valley Chenin Blanc yeast strains contribute characteristic notes of fresh grass, mango, and banana. This dual-substrate, dual-yeast, long fermentation winks at traditions from the franco- and anglophone rum worlds, renowned for their complexity.

Double distillation to ~180° with tight cuts in our custom-built hybrid batch still delivers a densely aromatic rum that is light on the palate; ideally suited for the refreshing cocktail applications that have made the rums of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean a global favorite. A light charcoal filtration and vatting process allows the best flavors to mingle before bottling without sugar or other additives.

  • Substrate: 75% Amber Cane Syrup; 25% Blackstrap Molasses

Fermentation: 5-6 days in closed, temperature-controlled, stainless steel fermenters; 10-12% ABV after fermentation

First Distillation: stripping run with wide cuts to 42-45% ABVSecond Distillation: rectification with column and dephlegmator activated; very tight cuts to 89-91% ABV

Filtration: single filtration through activated charcoal

Aging: 3-6 month vatting in stainless steel

    Sugar/Additives: none

    Bottling Strength: 40% ABV

  • Appearance: Clear, limpid

Aroma: Fresh grass, ripe yellow tropical fruits, vanilla frosting

Palate: Full, fresh, with notable cane syrup flavor

    Finish: Long, lingering, cooked molasses

GOLD RUM

Gold Rum is a versatile middleweight as comfortable in a pillowy soft Daiquiri as it is standing alone on the rocks. A year in used bourbon barrels lends our rum the spice, vanilla, and honey character the American whiskey drinker admires. And a touch of 3+year amburana-barrel aged rum ties a richly floral bow on the package.

  • Gold Rum is all about Goldilocksian balance. Not too old, not too young. Not too raw, not too woody. Not too boozy, not too soft. If you’re looking for one rum that can do it all, look no further.

Gold Rum starts off the same way our White Rum does. Ruthlessly tight cuts yield a soft rum with little need for maturation. It enters the barrel in pursuit of an oaken buttress, not a temporal taming.

Used bourbon barrels oblige, over the course of a year adding weight and familiar vanilla, caramel, and spice to our already full, fruity rum.

Before it hits the bottle, we blend in a touch of 3+ year amburana barrel-aged rum. This Brazilian hardwood, harvested pre-Bolsonaro under a federal sustainable forestry management program, adds a floral note, additional spice, and loads of texture.

  • Bottling Strength: 42% ABV

Substrate, Fermentation, and Distillation: as above

Aging: 99% Used Bourbon Barrels, 1+ year. Barrel entry proof: 125°

  • Appearance: Golden hay in color; free of haze or sedimentation.

Aroma: Gentle and inviting: vanilla, honey, white flower.

Palate: Medium weight. Soft oak. Honey, vanilla, banana, coconut.

Finish: Lasting baking spice, vanilla cookie, and molasses.

PX DARK RUM

Cotton & Reed PX Dark Rum is a bold, spicy, luxurious affair, showcasing the distillery's range. It’s more than capable of enchanting a Junglebird, elevating an Airmail, standing in for cognac in a Sidecar or Sazerac, or grooving with ginger beer. But you won’t be mad at it in a glass all by its lonesome.

  • Our rich, grassy rum spends a minimum of 18 months in heavily charred new American Oak barrels to acquire a firm backbone of vanilla, caramel, and spice familiar to the American whiskey drinker.  A finishing stint in a used PX Sherry butt rounds out the profile with luscious dark fruit. A light touch of cane syrup balances oak and wine's tannins.

  • Substrate, Fermentation, and Distillation: as above

Aging: New American Oak Barrels, 18 months. Barrel entry proof: 120°

Finishing: Used, re-seasoned 500L PX Sherry Butt; 6-8 weeks

Palate: Holiday gingerbread and baking spice give way to vanilla, bruleed sugar, and a hint of grass

Finish: Long with moderate tannic grip and a hint of rancio

COCONUT RUM

At last: a coconut rum that tastes like real coconut. Our secret? We flavor it with real coconut. Who knew?

All but the most misguided souls will love it solo. But it can also introduce true coconut character to a cocktail without the heavy baggage of coconut milk or cream. Coco Rickeys. Coco Daiquiris. Coco Negronis. Coco & Tonics.

  • We always aim to combat misperceptions about rum- that it’s always sweet, that it’s always artificially flavored, that it’s just for the beach. Coconut Rum in general is perhaps the ideal poster child for these flawed notions. Where better to take a stand for the naturally flavored, the mature, the $15-cocktail-appropriate?

This is the only one of our products ever to graduate from limited release to core portfolio member. Our limited release batches taught us why so many coconut products never see a real coconut: the coconut oil, so vital to flavor and texture, does not want to stay in solution. Unappetizing oil slicks and fatbergs in the bottle are a real risk.

Years of experimentation led us to our current process, which relies on a deceptively simple maceration and filtration regime. The result is a perfectly clear and undeniably delicious rum with stronger natural coconut flavor than you even dare to hope for.

  • Bottling Strength: 32.5% ABV

Substrate, Fermentation, and Distillation: as above

    Aging: None

    Flavoring: Dried organic coconut flakes.

Dosage: 35 g / L sugar. About the same amount found in coconut water.

    Filtration: 5 micron lenticular

  • Appearance: Clear. Pale yellow color. Occasional minor haze or sedimentation over time. Especially when cold.

Aroma: Coconut. But, like, real coconut.

Palate: Coconut. Pleasantly weighty due to integrated coconut oil content.

    Finish: Lingering Coconut. Duh.

ALLSPICE DRAM

Cotton & Reed Allspice Dram is a surprising delight able to add dimension to classic tropical cocktail calls while sitting happily alongside coastal amari on the dessert card. Perk up that Lion's Tail, take it long and low proof with lime and soda or short with ice and an orange peel, insta-mull hot cider, or even slip it into holiday baking. Intensely spiced, a little does a lot, but there's a lot a little can do.

  • Other Allspice Drams show a strong punch of allspice (Pimenta dioica) in a light rum base with as much sugar as the solution can stand; simultaneously astringent and oversweet. Our take balances the pinch of allspice by pulling it down in the mix, adding a complement of baking spices to deepen and round the flavor profile, dry-fermented lime for lift, and gentian for bitterness to keep sugar's dose in check.

  • Substrate, Fermentation, and Distillation: as above

    Aging: None

Botanicals: Allspice, burdock, turmeric, ginger, dehydrated lime, gentian, cinnamon, nigella, black pepper, Szechuan Pepper

Filtration: 5 micron lenticular Sugar: 200g/L from amber cane syrup and crystallized cane sugar

    Bottling Strength: 24% ABV

  • Appearance: Clear, rich red amber in color; occasional minor sedimentation over time

Aroma: Intense allspice, aromatic ginger, warm cinnamon and clove

Palate: Thick and warming, prickly spice with moderate grip giving way to light cleansing bitterness

Finish: Persistent warming spice boosted by lengthy light bitterness

SOLERA SCORPIO RUM 2023

Once a year for our November birthday we pull 150 liters of rum from our solera aging system (named Solera Scorpio for obvious reasons). The rum in the solera starts its aging journey in used bourbon barrels before being transferred to PX Sherry-seasoned casks and finally finished in a 450 liter used Armagnac cask. One-third of the final cask is harvested annually and bottled at cask strength.

Our 4th Annual Solera Scorpio release shows incredible development and continual progress, as we celebrate our SEVENTH anniversary. 8% of the rum in bottle has been aging for over 6 years; 78% for over 5 years; and the final 14% was distilled over 4 years ago.

The three-tier aging process adds tremendous complexity, and our annual release has us feeling like both exceptionally proud parents and excited kids showing off a good report card. We hope you'll agree that we've really started to grow up. If you have previous years' bottlings on your shelf, you'll enjoy the side-by-side tasting.

53% ABV. 199 bottles produced.

DRY SPICED RUM

Cotton & Reed Dry Spiced Rum is the spiced rum for gin lovers, and a nod to the craft cocktail movement, without which craft distillers would never have had a chance. Stir into a Negroni or splash with tonic. The more adventurous may explore Dry Spiced Rum's cocktailing affinity with a certain famous monastic liqueur or that artichoke amaro.

  • Whereas most spiced rums lead with vanilla, sweet orange, and loads of sugar, our carefully sourced, fermented, and distilled rum bursts with a complex blend of botanicals, at turns herbaceous and savory. Leading with revered Vervain (Verbena officinalis) and Seville Orange peel, the spice blend opens to a raft of gin botanicals including angelica, licorice, orris, and anise and a complement of warming spices including allspice, cinnamon, ginger, and clove. With the aromatic complexity of cumin and fenugreek and gentian's firmly bitter backstop, Dry Spiced Rum is simultaneously familiar and surprising.

  • Substrate, Fermentation, and Distillation: as above

Aging: NoneBotanicals: Vervain, Seville Orange, fenugreek, allspice, angelica, orris, gentian, cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, nigella, cumin, black pepper, licorice, star anise, Szechuan Pepper

    Filtration: 5 micron lenticular

    Sugar Content: 20g/L

    Bottling Strength: 35% ABV

  • Appearance: Gleaming gold with a hint of carthusian green

Aroma: Deep floral citrus, savory curry

Palate: Clean, bright, herbaceous, lightly bitter

Finish: Long and complex savory herbs

MELLOW GOLD BOURBON BARREL RUM

Mellow Gold was replaced by Gold Rum in 2023. Gold Rum achieves the same result that Mellow Gold did, but by a different path. While Mellow supplemented used bourbon barrel-aged rum with the herb Sweet Woodruff, Gold forgoes the herb in favor of rum aged in amburana barrels.

Cotton & Reed's Mellow Gold Bourbon Barrel Rum is a versatile middleweight as comfortable in a pillowy soft Daiquiri as it is standing alone on the rocks. Mellow Gold is both a bartender favorite and a grand way to introduce American whiskey drinkers to the world of rums.

6-9 months in used bourbon barrels adds vanilla, honey, and spice notes to our already soft, friendly, and fruity rum. A pinch of sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum) heightens aromatic intrigue with impressions of vanilla, black tea, and fresh hay.

Coconut Rum - June 2022

Available at Distillery & via Bacchus Importers
32.5% Alc. / Vol.
716 bottles produced. (It was so well received; we made another batch. And don’t tell anybody - but we’ll make this a core, year-round product in Spring 2023.)

Sometimes we love taking very seriously something very silly. Out of this drive was born this year’s Coconut Rum release.

We revisited 2021’s *extremely* well received coconut rum process this year. About one third of a pound of dried organic coconut flakes from the Philippines goes into producing each bottle, resulting in an extraordinary concentration of natural coconut flavor. We redistill a portion of the macerated rum to capture some of the lighter, ethereal sides of coconut. Then a new filtration process removes the oil and haze that made some of last year’s batch tasty but less than camera-ready.

Sip it solo, use it in a classic daiquiri, or just add soda water and a squeeze of lime for the best damn Rickey you ever drank.

Overproof White Rum - June 2022

Distillery-Only Release
57% Alc. / Vol.
121 bottles produced.

Our flagship 80-proof White Rum won Best of Class at the prestigious 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. That means that a bunch of very knowledgeable, respected people selected it as the world’s best White Rum this year.

This here Overproof White Rum is the same exact juice, but with less filtered water added. Get it? The best White Rum, but now there’s more of it and less water in your bottle. More flavor, more stronger, more good. We do this in fairly small batch sizes because it’s not for the faint of heart, it’s for the rum nerds ( <3 u ), the serious cocktail tinkerers, and the boozy daiquiri maniacs.

Fruity, grassy, rich, forceful… it’s what your summer needs.

Bottled in Bond Rum - June 2022

Distillery-Only Release
50% Alc. / Vol.
179 bottles produced.

Our oldest age statement single barrel rum yet. Four years in an ex- Maker's Mark barrel with French Oak staves yielded a lovely, layered oak impression on a rich and fruity rum base. It’s a brooding sipper, a muscular stirred cocktail foundation, and a standout member of a collector’s shelf.

Sip it neat, on the rocks, or make yourself a pretty dang fancy version of your favorite stirred cocktail. We make it into Old Fashioneds.

PX ALLSPICE DRAM - November 2021

Distillery-only release
24% Alc. / Vol.
126 bottles produced.

We’ve also re-tuned 2020’s PX Allspice Dram, a well-loved but short-lived variation on our core Allspice Dram. While last year we barrel aged and sherry-sweetened some Allspice Dram, the 2021 iteration is built on a boisterously fruity base of rums aged 2 years in ex-bourbon and ex-Jamaican-rum casks. We then spice that rum just as we do our Allspice Dram, which is to say, heavily and warmly, and then sweeten it with 4-year-aged Pedro Ximenez Sherry. The firm oak backing and dark-fruit-sherried sweetness transform our Dram from a versatile warming spice cocktail ingredient to a cherished sipper.

WALNUT BENEDICTION - November 2021

Distillery-only release
38% Alc. / Vol.
114 bottles produced.

A rare non-rum release for us. We begin with an apple brandy distilled from Maryland hard cider, which then rested for a period of months on Maryland-grown English walnuts. An infusion of herbs including cardamom, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, peppermint, and chamomile adds complexity and warmth, before the bottling is finished with very good Pennsylvania honey. An indulgent mid-Atlantic treat for sipping or sliding into classic cocktails like the Vieux Carre or Bobby Burns.

SOLERA SCORPIO - November 2021

Distillery-only release
57.1% Alc. / Vol.
195 bottles produced.

This is our second annual release of our cask-strength solera-aged rum. Each year we bottle a third of the volume of our 450-Liter Armagnac cask, which we then top up with rums from ex-bourbon barrels we soaked with sherry, which we then top up with rums from ex-bourbon barrels, which we then top up with new make. Each year the rum gets richer, older, and more inviting. This year’s bottling is a blend of rums from two to four years in age. We’ll continue this tradition for years to come, but in just its second outing, Solera Scorpio demonstrates considerable progress. Rich, supple, more approachable than you might expect of a rum at its proof. This is the swanky sipper that’ll keep you warm this winter.

COCONUT RUM - May 2021

Distillery-only release
35% Alc. / Vol.
340 bottles produced.

If you hate coconut rum, this is the coconut rum for you. Words fail to convey how naturally coconutty this tastes. We macerated our rum on a whole lot of organic coconut flakes for three days to achieve maximum deliciousness. Not too sweet, as always. There will be a smidgen of coconut oil in the bottle. That's because we made it with real coconut, so please be cool about it. You'll like it in a shot glass, a daiquiri, with tonic, or evenly split with an aged rum for a crushable old fashioned thing.

RUMBARBARO - May 2021

Distillery-only release
20% Alc. / Vol.
264 bottles produced.

We aged one barrel of rum-based rhubarb root amaro for 18 months in a former red wine barrel. Our eleven botanicals integrated beautifully during that maturation. Neat or on the rocks, it will more than scratch your amaro-shaped after-dinner itch. Or if you're feeling fancy, swap it in for Campari in your Negroni, for vermouth in your Manhattan, or float it on your daiquiri.

OVERPROOF WHITE RUM - May 2021

Distillery-only release
57% Alc. / Vol.
144 bottles produced.

White rum is the purest expression of our craft. Our source ingredients, our fermentation, our distillation, all shine through unaltered by wood, time, flavors, or sweeteners. We figure the less water there is in that bottle, the more you can taste what we do. Notes of mango, banana, grassy sugarcane, and vanilla cake on top of a richly textured spirit mean your high-octane daiquiris will taste just right this summer.

PX ALLSPICE DRAM - November 2020

Distillery-only release
24% Alc. / Vol.
Only 138 bottles produced.
Sip it, mix it if you’re the fancy type.

Dang. Turns out if you take the intense, warm spice profile of our Allspice Dram, sweeten it with real fancy 4-year PX sherry instead of the usual molasses, and then stick it in a barrel for nine months, it tastes real good. Too bad we only made like… almost none of it. It’s great on its own, but you could use it in a cocktail as you might use an amaro if you’re feelin’ fancy. The spice character of the allspice dram fades a bit as it ages in a barrel and lightly oxidizes. It also integrates beautifully with the rich dark fruit of the PX Sherry component, making this a more luxurious after-dinner sipper than our normal Allspice Dram.

SOLERA SCORPIO - November 2020

Distillery-only release
54.5% Alc. / Vol.
Only 195 bottles produced.
Sip it, cherish it, all that stuff.

You know how horoscopes can be so vague they can’t go wrong? That’s kinda like how you can’t go wrong with this rum. To commemorate our distillery’s own Scorpio-season birthday, November 12, we’re introducing the Solera Scorpio. We’ve aged our rums up to two years in used bourbon barrels, then moved the rums into PX Sherry-seasoned barrels, and finally blended those rums into a giant 450-Liter armagnac cask for a year. Starting this year we’ll pull a third of the liquid from the armagnac cask annually, and replenish that cask with the bourbon- and sherrified rums for years to come. We look forward to seeing how our the rum from our solera system changes as the years go on, and we hope you’ll pick up a bottle to join us.

Despaccino.jpg

DESPACCINO 2018

32% Alc. / vol.

The coffee rum with the faux-Italian name is back, and it’s more coffee-y than ever before. Made with coffee beans from Counter Culture and cold brew from DC’s Junius, Despaccino puts coffee flavor front and center. To highlight the fruitier side of the coffee we’ve selected, rhubarb and dehydrated orange provide levity, while cacao contributes its familiar richness. It’s a great sipper on its own, but makes a great cocktail base spirit as well. Use for coffee-inflected boozy stirred cocktails, or marry surprising coffee character into a heavy sour.

despaccino bottles-11.jpg

DESPACCINO 2017

A coffee & botanical infused digestif to be enjoyed slowly; on the rocks. We made Despaccino with Stumptown Coffee Hair Bender Espresso to celebrate DC's upcoming Coffee Fest, which includes the 2018 SCA Barista & Brewers Cup Preliminary. Coffee meets dehydrated blood orange, fenugreek, rhubarb, woodruff, cacao and gentian. This is not a coffee liqueur. Despaccino is best consumed slowly - like an espresso after dinner. Limited to 300 bottles.

This spirit is sold out.

CIDER BARREL SPICED RUM

On our first anniversary, Cotton & Reed is releasing Cider Barrel Spiced, our first barrel-rested product. We rested overproof Cotton & Reed Dry Spiced Rum in a cider barrel for six months. The barrel from Millstone Ciderworks previously held cider pressed from Gold Rush apples, whose inherent spice notes fold neatly into our botanical blend. Oak and fruit put some fall-appropriate flesh to our rum's already inviting bones. It's an elegant sipper for your own home bar, and makes a great gift. Like Cotton & Reed, it's not too old, but it's been around for at least a little while.

Limited to 100 bottles; released on 11/12/2017.
